Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) states are states that have entered into an agreement allowing nurses in one state to practice in states that are part of the Compact. This allows for a broadening of nurse mobility and improved access to care across states. The Nurse Compact is intended to increase access to healthcare by eliminating barriers, such as licensure requirements, that can impede a nurse’s ability to move from one state to another. Through this agreement, nurses can work in multiple states without having to obtain additional licenses or educational training specific to each state.

Currently, there are 25 states that have adopted the Compact states program in some form, although not all states follow the same guidelines and regulations regarding nurse mobility. The list is growing. It is important for nurses to understand which states they may be permitted to practice in under this Compact, as well as any other requirements imposed by each state’s board of nursing, to maintain compliance.
