Hi. I’m Ella, a travel nurse, and I’m excited to share with you a glimpse into what a typical day looks like for me. I get asked all the time what it’s like to be a travel nurse, so I thought I’d take you behind the scenes of my life on the move—working in new places, meeting new people, and providing care to those who need it most.
Right now, I’m on the morning shift at my current assignment, but in travel nursing, no two days are ever the same, and that includes my schedule. It could change from day to day or assignment to assignment, depending on the needs of the facility I’m working with. Flexibility is key, and I’ve learned to roll with the changes! Here’s my current daily routine…
Mornings: Starting the Day Right
- 5:30 AM – Rise and Shine
As a travel nurse, my mornings start early. Each minute counts, and since I’m often in a new city or town, I need to be organized. I make sure everything’s ready the night before—scrubs, stethoscope, nursing ID, and any essentials for the day ahead. Travel nursing requires me to adapt quickly, and staying organized is key. - 6:00 AM – Coffee & Centering Myself
I take a few quiet moments to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. This is my time to mentally prepare for the day. I review my notes from the previous shift and check in with my agency for any updates. If I’m far from home, I make sure to connect with family or friends. A few minutes of calm helps me get in the right mindset for a busy day.
The Commute: A New Adventure Every Day
- 6:30 AM – The Travel to Work
As a travel nurse, my commute is rarely the same. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to be staying right next to the hospital, but other times, I may need to drive a bit further depending on where I’ve found housing. What I love most about this part of my day is that every assignment takes me somewhere new. Whether I’m navigating busy city streets or cruising along peaceful country roads, the commute always feels like a little adventure. I leave a little earlier than usual in case I get lost or have trouble finding parking, but the change of scenery always makes it worth it. Sometimes I even grab a quick snack on the go to fuel up for the day ahead.
On the Job: Dynamic, Rewarding, and Always Changing
- 7:00 AM – Arriving at the Facility
Once I arrive at the hospital or clinic, I head straight in, ready for the day ahead. We usually start with a team briefing to go over patient updates, care plans, and any urgent issues. Being on different assignments means I’ve had to learn new workflows quickly, but I always make a point of introducing myself to the team and asking questions when needed. This helps me feel more comfortable and prepared. - 7:30 AM – Morning Rounds Begin
The day picks up pace as I begin patient care. Every patient I work with is unique, and I find this diversity one of the most rewarding aspects of nursing. From administering medications to checking vital signs, I’m deeply involved in providing care. I always make time to sit and listen to my patients—sometimes a simple conversation can make a big difference in their day.
Midday Activity
- Noonish – Lunch Break
Lunch is usually brief, but I always look forward to it. Sometimes, I’ll eat with colleagues in the breakroom and other times, I take a walk to a local café to try something new. The great thing about travel nursing is the chance to explore different cities and try new restaurants—whether it’s a food truck in a big city or a small-town diner. - 1:00 PM – Afternoon Rounds
The afternoon brings a new set of challenges. I revisit patients, monitor their progress, and make necessary adjustments to their care as needed. There are often emergencies or unexpected cases, so flexibility is a must. I might assist in the ER, help with procedures, or handle administrative tasks—it all depends on the day. What I’ve learned from travel nursing is flexibility and adaptability are key.
Wrapping Up the Day
- Transitioning to End of Shift
My shift ending time can be unpredictable, but when it does wind down, I hand off my responsibilities to the incoming nurse. I make sure to go over any changes in patients’ conditions and provide updates on what needs attention. This helps ensure a smooth transition and continuity of care, no matter how the day wraps up.Once I’ve passed off all my notes and patient updates, I take a moment to reflect on the day. Every assignment has its rhythm, and while I may not be doing the same thing every day, I take comfort in knowing I’ve made a difference.
- After work, I Unwind
I wind down by enjoying a good meal—either exploring a local spot or cooking something quick. I then relax with a good book, journaling, or listening to music. Sometimes, I take a walk, practice yoga, watch a favorite show,or call a loved one to decompress.I always focus on getting 7-8 hours of sleep, so I am recharged for the next day. I have busy days, but they are fulfilling, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
