Legislation…What is the US Government Doing to Help Nurses?

The US federal government is taking steps to help nurses through various pieces of legislation. In 2020, the Corona Virus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed to provide relief for frontline nurses and healthcare workers. This act increased funding for hospitals, granted bonuses to eligible healthcare workers and allowed access to flexible paid leave options. Through these initiatives, nurses received benefits in exchange for providing healthcare services where they were needed most.

Although the CARES Act ended in 2021, there are numerous US government funded programs offered through the education system to assist nurses and those who want tore-enter the workforce. For example, eligible nursing students can apply to the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program. If accepted, the government will paytuition, fees, and other educational costs. In return, graduating students work at a Critical Shortage Facilities. Also, there are educational programs available to experienced nurses who have been out of the workforce. These programs help them become re-accredited as quickly as possible so they can return to work with ease. Both the government and schools are working together demonstrating their support of nurses during difficult times and nurse shortages.

Additionally, the Nurse Loan Repayment Program, provides financial assistance to help nursing students pay for their education. This is another avenue for students who want to pursue a nursing career.

The programs have been instrumental in helping nurses receive the assistance they need. New programs are evolving to meet the needs of the healthcare system.

Furthermore, Medicare for All Act seeks to expand Medicare coverage and provide accessible healthcare benefits to nurses. This proposed act would guarantee Medicare coverage and access to comprehensive care, allowing nurses the opportunity to pursue their field without worrying about high medical costs. With increasing support from the government, it is hoped that the number of nurses will increase and continue providing quality healthcare services with peace of mind.
